11-hydroxylase deficiency is relatively less common and results in inadequate production of cortisol, an increase in ACTH levels and an increase in the production of the precursor steroids, 11-deoxycortisol and deoxycorticosterone. The latter is a powerful mineralocorticoid and produces hypertension and salt retention.
